Gnutella 2 is a protocol which shares some similarities with the Gnutella protocol.
It was created by Michael Stokes as a fork of Gnutella. The draft specifications of his protocol where released on March 26, 2003.
His use of the name "Gnutella 2" and the domain gnutella2.com for his program created much aversion against him among other Gnutella developers, since he developed it alone instead of working with the Gnutella developer community, but his program (Shareaza) quickly got many users and some Gnutella clients implemented his protocol during the past years.
